1954 Battle Royal – Memories by John Cole

© John Cole

John war L/Bdr (Lance-Bombardier) beim 1st Regt Royal Horse Artillery in Munster von 1954 bis 1956. Seinerzeit war sein Regiment ein Teil der 20th Armoured Brigade. Weitere Einheiten in dieser Brigade waren 2nd and 6th Tanks, 17/21st Lancers and 2nd Battalion The Geenjackets were the Infanterie-Regiment.

John was a L/Bdr (Lance-Bombardier) in the 1st Regt Royal Horse Artillery stationed at Munster from 1954 to 1956. We were part of 20th Armoured Brigade. Other units in the Brigade were 2nd and 6th Tanks, 17/21st Lancers and 2nd Battalion The Geenjackets were the infantry regiment. We were equipped with 25 pdr Sexton self propelled guns but later reaquipped with 155 mm self propelled guns. Took part in several exercises and live firing on the Hohne ranges, once in the coldest winter they had for a long time in Germany. I have quite a few photos of the time there which I intend to feed onto the site gradually.

The 1st photo shows a Cromwell Tank being loaded in barracks 1RHA Munster 1954. Was a Battery forward observation recce vehicle. Very fast but not very well armoured. I only ever had a ride around the barrack perimeter but would have loved to have driven it.
