31 Armoured Engineer Squadron – Memories of Tony Benning Pt.1

31 Armoured Engineer Squadron, ein klangvoller Name einer traditionsreichen Einheit, mit Fahrzeugen, die Aussehen, als wenn sie frisch aus einem Science Fiction Film entsprungen sind! Ich freue mich riesig darüber Euch heute hier einige Bilder von Anthony George Benning zeigen zu dürfen, der seinerzeit bei dieser Einheit stationiert gewesen ist! Tony hatte so großes Vertrauen zu mir, das er mir alle seine Photos  im Original aus England gesendet hat! Ich habe sie gescannt und inzwischen sind sie wieder zurück zu seinem Besitzer! Dafür möchte ich mich recht herzlich bedanken!

Die folgende ersten 4 Bilder sind entstanden auf dem Übungsplatz Achmer. Tony kann sich nicht genau daran erinnern wann, aber es muss zwischen 1972 und 1974 gewesen sein!

Für alle die dieses Fahrzeug noch nicht kennen, (ich habe diesen Typ leider live auch nie gesehen) es ist ein FV 4016 Centurion ARK – (Armoured Ramp Carrier). Gebaut 1963 auf Basis eines Centurion Mk.5.

Das Fahrzeug welches selbst ein Teil der Brücke ist kann einen Graben von 75 feet (1 ft = 30,48 cm) also ca. 22,5 m überspannen! Seine Tragfähigkeit beträgt dabei 80t!

31 Armoured Engineer Squadron, a sonorous name of a traditional unit, with vehicles looked as if they are freshly sprung out from a science fiction movie! I am really happy about to be able to show you today some pictures of Anthony George Benning, who was at that time stationed in this unit! Tony had so much confidence in me that he has sent me all his original pictures from England! I scanned them and now they are meadow back to his owner! For that I have to say thank you so much, mate!!

The following first 4 pictures are taken at the practice site Achmer. Tony can not remember exactly when, but it must have been from 1972 to 1974!
For those who don’t know this vehicle, (I unfortunately didn’t saw this vehicle in action) it is a FV 4016 Centurion ARK – (Armoured Ramp Carrier). Built in 1963 on the basis of a Centurion Mk.5.
Built on a Mark 5, the vehicle itself is part of the bridge. It can span a gap of up to 75 feet, and can bear up to 80 tons.

Ein weiteres Foto von Tony zeigt eine Garage in Tidworth (UK). Die Fahrzeuge sind alle von den “11th Royal Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own)” oder “10th Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales’s Own)”. Diese beiden Regimenter wurden allerdings damals auch schon zusammengelegt und bildeten dann bis 1992 die “The Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales’s Own)”. 1992 folgte dann die nächste Reformation und die “Royal Hussars” verschmolzen mit den 14th/20th King’s Hussars und bildeten “The King’s Royal Hussars”. 

Die Einheit bereitete sich seinerzeit auf ein Manöver auf den Salisbury Plains vor!
