Heute haben wir einen tollen Bericht eines Zeitzeugen bekommen!

Herzlich Willkommen Alan Chatt!

Er war von 1965 – 1967 in Detmold beim LAD REME 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wales’s Dragoon Guards) aus denen später zusammen mit den Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons) die Royal Scots Dragoon Guards hervorgingen stationiert!

Die Fotos die er mit gesendet hat, sind vom letzten Manöver seiner Einheit in Soltau! Kurz danach wurden die 3rd Carabiniers umstrukturiert und wurden zu einer Aufklärungseinheit mit Saladins, Saracen und Ferret!

Alan seine Squadron war während eines Nachtmanövers in den Gräben in Stellung gegangen! Sie hörten die Motoren der Centurion starten und hörten sie auch losfahren!

“Wir sahen noch die Konvoilichter, als eines davon auf einmal in den Himmel zeigte! Danach hörten wir, wie die Motoren hoch drehten und Befehle hallten durch die Nacht, dann war auf einmal Ruhe!” so schrieb er mir!

Als er und seine Kameraden nachschauten, was passiert war, fanden sie 4 Centurions vor, die mit Ihren Kanonen in den Himmel zeigten und es sah so aus, als wenn sie Fahrzeuge zur Luftabwehr waren!

Was war passiert?

Ein Centurion ist von dem Weg abgekommen und seitwärts in den Graben gerutscht! Die anderen drei versuchten den in Misslage geratenen Centurion zu umfahren und gerieten dabei in dieselbe missliche Lage! Da es in der Nacht zu gefährlich wurde die Fahrzeuge zu bergen, entschlossen sich Alan und seine Kameraden die Bergungsaktion am nächsten Tag durchzuführen!

Als sie sich den nächsten Morgen die in schieflache geratenen Centurions ansahen, stellten sie fest, das die Fahrzeuge nicht nur in den Graben gerutscht sind, sondern das auch Kettenglieder und Leiträder beschädigt wurden! Sie mussten sogar die Ketten auftrennen, damit Sie die Fahrzeuge wieder fahrbereit bekamen! 

Die Reparatur- und Bergearbeiten zogen sich bis in den Nachmittag hinein und als “Danke” Schön bekamen sie von dem dankbaren Squadron-Commander  der Centurion eine Kiste Carlsberg!

I was with A sqn LAD REME 3rd Carabineirs in Detmold 65 to 67 until we were posted to Cyprus. This was our last exercise in Soltau before we left to transfer to a recon role in Saladins, Saracens and Ferret scout cars.

The Sqdn was on a night exercise and we were sitting tight in the forest below the earth causeway. We heard the tanks start up and move off. We could just make out the convoy lights in the dark, when suddenly one light went up in the air.

We then had lots of engine revving up, shouts, then silence. We did not have far to go to investigate, in fact we walked. Only to find four Cents in the anti aircraft position,due to them trying to go around the stranded tank the slipping off the causeway themselves.

As it was to risky to do anything in the dark we left them until the morning.

It was a bit of a shock when we saw them and the position they were in. On inspection we found four tracks so stuck and jammed we could not do anything until we had cut them.

Our Tiffy was stretched out with two of us holding his legs with instruction to pull him back when the track was cut. Just as well we did as one track jumped so hard it ripped up four feet of track guard into the air, another job to fix!.

After that we used both ARV and another Cent to pull them out. This took most of the day, repairing tracks etc and we also found four cracked front idler wheel brackets and a couple of Idler wheels also cracked, which we had to change.

Needless to say we had them back in service by mid afternoon and a crate of Carlsberg given to us by a grateful Squadron Commander.
